Telehealth for Pediatric Gastroenterology
Organized by Telehealth for Pediatric GI Care Now (TPGCN)

Part I: June 10, 2020, 8:00PM ET
Part II: June 17, 2020, 8:00PM ET

INTRODUCTION
As we are all aware, the COVID-19 pandemic has irrevocably altered the lives of patients, families, and health care providers.  Within three months, telehealth has moved at light speed from an interesting initiative to a central role in health care delivery.  In short order, telemedicine has become a lifeline for the delivery of direct care for both pediatric gastroenterology outpatients and inpatients.  Pediatric GI telehealth care includes not only physicians, but also nurse practitioners, nurses, dietitians, social workers, and trainees.

NASPGHAN members’ current experience with telehealth will be critical to the viability of our subspecialty in the near and distant future.  Our effective use of telehealth platforms and technologies will also enable improved patient-centered models of care that have been shown to improve outcomes.

Education on development and optimization of a telehealth program for pediatric GI providers is urgently needed. Our colleagues are now in the throes of a rapid, ‘helter skelter’ transition to telehealth without an established pathway in order to provide ongoing care for their patients.  Some practices have managed to successfully transition from in person to telemedicine delivery within two to three weeks.  However, many are struggling with the transition and many are still on the sidelines.
